Privacy Policy
Version 2026-06 · Effective June 2026
Amana is committed to protecting your privacy and handling your personal information responsibly in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it.
1. Who We Are
Amana (Pty) Ltd, a Juristic Representative of Amana Financial Services (Pty) Ltd (FSP 49436), is the responsible party for the personal information you provide when applying for or managing your funeral insurance policy.
Our policies are underwritten by Safrican Insurance Company Limited (FSP 15123). Both entities are subject to applicable South African law, including the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).
2. What Personal Information We Collect
We collect information that is necessary to administer your funeral insurance policy and assess any claims. This includes: full name, date of birth, gender, South African ID number or passport number, contact details (cell number, email address, home/work telephone), residential and postal address, banking details (for premium collection and claim payment), source of funds, marital status, beneficiary details, and details of any covered dependants.
We may also collect a copy of your identity document and, if applicable, documentation relating to a claim (such as a death certificate, BI-1663 form, or police report).
We collect this information directly from you at registration, through your group administrator, or through authorised intermediaries.
3. Why We Use Your Personal Information (Purpose)
We use your personal information to: (a) process and administer your funeral insurance policy; (b) collect premiums and pay valid claims; (c) verify your identity and prevent fraud; (d) comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, including POPIA, the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS), and the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA); (e) communicate with you about your policy, premium status, and claims; and (f) conduct sanctions screening as required by law.
We will not use your personal information for any purpose incompatible with those listed above without your prior written consent.
4. Who We Share Your Information With
We share your personal information only where necessary and with the following parties: Safrican Insurance Company Limited (our underwriter, who carries the insurance risk and pays claims); payment processing partners (for premium collection); service providers who assist with data storage, IT, and communication — all bound by confidentiality obligations; and law enforcement agencies, regulators, or courts where required by law.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Where your information is transferred outside South Africa, we ensure appropriate protections are in place as required by POPIA.
5. How Long We Keep Your Information
We retain your personal information for as long as your policy is active and for a minimum of five (5) years after the policy ends, as required by applicable legislation.
Claims records are retained for the period required by the underwriter and applicable law.
6. Security of Your Information
We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information from unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
Access to your information is restricted to authorised personnel who require it to perform their duties.
You are responsible for keeping your portal login credentials confidential. Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorised access to your account.
7. Your Rights Under POPIA
You have the right to: request access to the personal information we hold about you; request correction or deletion of inaccurate or outdated information; object to processing of your personal information in certain circumstances; withdraw consent to processing (noting that this may affect our ability to administer your policy); and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) if you believe your rights have been violated.
